U.S News showcases my ‘credit education’ blog

You may have heard about “Credit Educator,” a new service from credit bureau Experian that offers one-on-one credit education by phone. For a cost of $29.95, consumers can speak with a specially trained Experian representative who can answer questions about the consumer’s credit score and report.

I’ve written about the topic before for CreditCards.com , but more recently discussed the topic for U.S. News & World Report’s “My Money” blog.

My blog post, “Credit Education Just a Phone Call Away,” outlines my personal experience testing the new Experian service. Check out that blog to read about what I learned about the service — and my own credit.

Lemon Makes Digital Copies of Paper Receipts

Written on October 29, 2011 – 9:05 am | by Alicia Ross

If you’re like me, receipts seem to multiply in your wallet, balling up or shredding and generally making a mess, until I throw them away in annoyance. A new smartphone app called Lemon aims to address that problem, by making digital copies of your receipts and organizing them in handy files.

To use the app, you download it onto your phone and register for an account. (It’s free for up to 100 receipts a month; fees apply for heavier use). Then, when you make a purchase, you take pictures of your paper receipts with your phone’s camera. Lemon automatically files them and creates a summary, including the date and amount of the expenditure. You can choose a category to file it under, like “business” or “personal,” “cash” or “credit card.”

The app also makes it easier to use the digital receipts that some stores, like Best Buy, are now offering. I have so far declined to give my e-mail address for such receipts, for fear of being spammed to death. Lemon assigns you a dedicated lemon.com e-mail address that you can provide for digital receipts, to keep them from clogging your main e-mail accounts.

During one recent week, having just returned from a trip, I decided to give the app a try. It downloaded quickly
